Coastline and Columnar Joints

This view of the western side of Cape Tsumeki reveals hexagonal, geometric patterns of columnar joints that formed when lava cooled and hardened after an ancient underwater volcanic eruption. Among many other natural wonders, this location of columnar joints has been included in the Izu Peninsula UNESCO Global Geopark.
