Located on Jogashima Island at the end of the Miura Peninsula (Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan), the arches and caves of “Umanose Arch” (Horseback Arch) were first referenced in writing by Keigetsu Omachi, a literary master from the Meji Era (1868-1912). In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake pushed the local seafloor up by 1.4 meters (4.9 feet) making this cave accessible by foot. Current measurements indicate that the entire Miura Peninsula continues to rise up out of the ocean at a rate of 0.3 to 1 mm (0.01 to 0.03 inches) every year.
